Miss America Nina Davuluri? I'M MR. REASONABLE!

I am disgusted by...OTHER peoples' disgust. They usually get it wrong, aren't funny, and pick the stupidest targets.

I'M MR. REASONABLE compared to what you find from TWEETS or in the idiot "comments" section of newspaper websites.

Tweeting? Mostly it's for lazy morons. The website comment box is for kneejerk jerks who have to overreact instantly and usually ignore the news item to yammer their racist obsession or impotent fixations on Obama. Or both.

Like, these inane Tweets on Nina Davuluri, the new Miss America.

And

below....

Here's

Nina

Nina was the entry from the Empire State, where 9/11 took place. It marks the second year in a row that a Miss New York won the crown. Which instantly negates a well-repeated Tweet: "Why don't we ever get a WHITE Miss America?" For the record, last year's white Miss America is standing behind Nina. Here's a better shot of her, the moment she won:

Yeah, great. Her name is Mallory Hagan. You don't get more white, these days, than having one of those stupid last-name is a first-name deals. Mallory. Britney. Morgan. Eccch. (I prefer Eccch. Actually the Indian girl's first name, Nina is more traditional for white women!"

Yep, I'm MR. REASONABLE compared to Tweets that gripe about Obama's influence on a Miss America pageant, the notion that nobody black or Asian can be beautiful, or that you're not "American" unless you were born here or you're a member of whatever narrow group of ethnics a person allows into their special bubble of the American Dream. For a long time, that list excluded whites who happened to be Catholic, or Jewish, or from Italy or Poland or even Ireland. Making fun of ethnic origins...you'd see that in the movies right up through the 1940's, with jokes about the Irish cop, the Italian street vender and the Jewish anything. And no question, if this year's winner was white but named Rabinowitz, or Wojciehowicz or O'Brien or Colavito, some assholes would be Tweeting their racist rage.

I haven't watched a Miss America or Miss World or Miss USA pageant in years. Back in the late counter-culture hippie-dippie 60's, it was kind of fun to watch the Miss America contestants trying to preserve good old American values as they stiffly toddled around in tight evening gowns and heels, showed the world how NOT to play violin, tap dance or sing "The Impossible Dream," and manage to look unsexy in a bathing suit. Over the years, peeping in for a few minutes or so, the oddest thing about the show was how many downright UGLY women were on it...how the concept of beauty could be so warped.

The pageant itself has been pretty meaningless in terms of springboarding a woman into any kind of real fame. Even when Bert Parks was the host and it was the one and only pageant in the land, winning it didn't mean much. Given that Miss America IS a White Bread, it's no surprise that a few artificial beauties who became actresses didn't amount to much: Phyllis George, Mary Ann Mobley, Bess Myerson (the first Jewish Miss America) and Lee Meriwether. Of that lot, Meriwether had the longest career, doing well in bland supporting roles ("Time Tunnel" and "Barnaby Jones") but failing in juicier ones (Catwoman in the "Batman" movie starring Adam West).

Remember any other Miss America winners? The first black one, Vanessa Williams, had to relinquish her crown when it turned out she'd posed for Penthouse magazine. As for the infamous Anita Bryant...no...she didn't win, she was a runner-up.

As for Nina Davuluri, her victory has to be as bittersweet as the too-spicy naan you often get in an Indian restaurant (even after the waiter nodded when you said to go easy on ALL the spices). I mean, she wakes up in the morning and the papers are full of the backlash Tweets:

Gotta admit, I got a chuckle out of "Miss 7-11." But...

Me? I'm MR. REASONABLE. It goes back to Lenny Bruce, who asked if any guy in the audience would actually prefer the white woman to the black woman...if the white woman was Kate Smith and the black woman was Lena Horne.
