In this case, the cop was paralyzed. Left to spend the next 30 years in a chair.
But Steve McDonald was a noble sod, and the "happy ending" was that he pointedly "forgave" the nasty, mindless, violent bastard. After all, the kid was just 15, and making trouble in Central Park. Caught, he did what any 15 year-old would do: haul out a gun and try and kill the cop who had caught him.
The ending has come for Steve McDonald.
30 fucking years in a chair. Not exactly enjoying fucking. Not exactly being able to shit and piss in peace, either.
You want to be 29, with so much life ahead of you...and then paralyzed FROM THE NECK DOWN because of a little malevolent monster?
And yet, he'd be wheeled out to applause because a) he was still alive, and b) SUCH a GOOD GUY he FORGAVE the little shit who wrecked his life.
Oh, no, no, "wrecked" isn't the word.
He presented himself as one happy guy in his fucking wheelchair.
Today, the NY POST and other papers are running editorial about what an inspiration he was. He was dead from the neck down, couldn't do anything about an itch on his nose, or comb his hair, but he was asked to speak in front of school groups. He even journeyed to Northern Ireland to give his "faith and forgiveness" message to "both sides" of the conflicts there. The son he could never hold in his arms or play ball with, grew up to become a cop. Oh yes, look at that guy in the wheelchair, blowing into a straw to navigate it, all because of a little monster who couldn't have cared less if he lived or died.
Sure, you show that you can recover from depression, and be the spokesman for paralyzed people that God intended, but forgive? FORGIVE?
His public show of forgiveness was a message: Listen, little bastards and Niggas everywhere, go ahead and shoot cops. They deserve it, and they'll forgive you, because they understand you had a GOOD REASON to be violent.
Only this kid didn't have a GOOD REASON. They never do. As bad as your situation is, with poverty or cruelty, hundreds have it the same, or worse. 99% of them DON'T resort to crime. This kid's friends stayed in school at 15, OR, they dropped out to get paying jobs in stores, or with the city. They didn't go into Central Park looking to rob people, and they didn't carry a gun and whip it out to shoot a cop and run.
But McDonald was famous for his forgiveness. How heartwarming. Don't feel sorry for HIM.
It was said that he "befriended" the kid and they "kept in touch" during the 8 years the little savage spent in jail. Being only 15 at the time, and McDonald not actually being DEAD, there was parole. LOVELY...LOVELY...
And what did the kid do once out on parole? He and another moron friend went zooming around on a motorcycle, doing wheelies and endangering drivers and pedestrians. The motorcycle sped out of control, and the cop-shooter flew off, hit his coconut, and died.
Watta tragedy. He didn't grow up to be President, like he surely could've.
Meanwhile, don't get up, Steve. Stay seated at the funeral, and once again tell the world how you forgave the attacker.
Yeah, we get it. You move on. Or rather, ROLL on.
Steve wrote a book with the provocative title, "Why Forgive?" It was written with his pastor. Nope, have NOT read it. There are people who right uplifting books about being shot, maimed, mutilated...GOD IS GREAT. Which is also the slogan of terrorists.
Let's re-visit just how this guy was killed:
"Detective McDonald and a co-worker were on patrol in Central Park, because there had been reports about a robbery in the park. Three young boys between the age of 13 and 15 looked suspicious and started running away when the two police officers went towards them. They split up, and McDonald found them hiding in some bushes. He started to question them, and noticed something in the sock of one of the boys and when he wanted to see what it was, he was shot and nearly killed. The first of the three bullets that hit Steven McDonald hit him in the head, above his eye. The second hit his throat which caused him to have a speaking disability and the third shattered his spine, paralyzing him from the neck down and leaving him quadriplegic and in need of a ventilator."
Why forgive indeed. You can rationalize it all you want for a couple of hundred pages. It's just a waste of a tree.
Well, it's one thing to simply NOT think about the jerk who shot you, another to actually FORGIVE, and by doing so, raise yourself to saintly status while giving other little monsters the idea that they can get away with it and be coddled with attention and forgiveness because whites have so much guilt.
What a sad, stupid story. We hear the songs. Henley sang one: "It's about forgiveness...about forgiveness..." Yeah. And the great Moody Blues: "When he felt hurt, it was because HE WAS NOT UNDERSTANDING!!!"
I'll tell you this. I've been hurt and I've been victimized, and I do understand the flaws in the perps and why it happened. That doesn't mean I forgive. I don't. I wish 'em the WORST. All I choose to do is FORGET, as much as possible. Keep them out of my mind. I would never shake hands and say "I forgive you." NEVER. What would it do? First off, some would say, "Forgive for what, I did nothing wrong!" Second, it would just sanction them to do the same shit to others and figure eventually the others would offer a friendly "all is forgiven" grin.
No. The problem with Sweeney Todd was "he never forgot," more than "he never forgave."
Don't forget the mistakes you made, or turn a blind eye to human nature. Just try and forget the piece of shit who doesn't deserve any more of your life. Not if you can't get revenge and not be caught.
"Yeah, I shot da cop, nearly killed that mutha fucka. I'm BAD! Hey, yo, he fo' gave me, yo. So instead of gettin' a job, what say you and me go joy ride on a mo-tah cy-kooo, an' do wheelies!! Ha ha ha...YOWWWWWWW."
The good news is that bastard died such a short time after getting out of the slammer. McDonald? He got to spend many more years being saluted for being a survivor. And he waved as he sat in his wheelchair.
