Want a second opinion, Teddy? She's ugly, too.
Most who saw the fight figured it was a shut-out for Floyd Mayweather. Compubox confirmed that the red-headed Mexican Saul "Canelo" Alvarez landed very little, and almost nothing to Floyd's elusive noggin. When gross Ross, the 64-year-old with a blunderful record of peculiar decisions, scored it a draw, it meant one thing:
That all the people who put down big bucks on a "unanimous decision win" for Floyd lost their bets. That's millions and million of dollars. If you were a powerful (and criminal) head of a betting operation, wouldn't you consider bribing or intimidating a woman into scoring a draw?
Some believe it was Golden Boy Productions who tried to get their man Alvarez a victory. Golden Boy is run by Oscar de la Hoya, a big Alvarez buddy. But Golden Boy's CEO, Richard Schaefer, said after the fight, "How that judge could be appointed after the decision of Bradley and Pacquiao is not a question I can answer. How can that happen? Is it going to happen again?"
Indeed, Ross's record for scoring for the wrong guy, or draws, is well known by boxing writers:
June 9, 2012 — Manny Pacquaio vs Timothy Bradley
Ross scores 115-113 in favor of Bradley, a score widely condemned by fans and media.
Nov. 12, 2011 — Juan Carlos Burgos vs Luis Cruz
Ross was the only judge not to score heavily in favor of Burgos. Scored it a 95-95 draw.
Aug. 13,2011 — Abner Mares vs Joseph Agbeko I
She was the only judge not to see Mares as the winner. She scored a draw 113-113.
May 7, 2011 — Rodel Mayol vs Javier Gallo
The other judges saw it heavily in favor of Mayol. Ross scored a draw 95-95.
And so it goes.
Teddy Atlas: " Another dubious situation. Another black eye for boxing…this is really destroying the boxing industry...boxing is unregulated, it has no national commission like the other sports, and it's destroying itself."
At one time, the great Sen. John McCain proclaimed he was going to do something about this. He said so on "Tuesday Night Fights," and you know how long ago that was! Sean O'Grady and Al Albert hosting. When did that go off the air, 15 years ago? 20? McCain went on to run for President and is on television practically every weekend guesting on political talk shows. He never did do a thing about corrupt or incompetent boxing decisions, or the alphabet soup of sleazes like the WBA and WBC and other "sanctioning" bodies.
But, you know what? It's all "amusement" to boxing fans. They're masochists. Sado-masochists. They love to watch guys beat each other up, and they LOVE to bitch and moan about bad decisions. It gives them something to talk about after the fight's over. "Robbery!" "The fix was in!" They LOVE it. The Mayweather-Alvarez fight, dull as it was, was the highest-grossing fight in boxing history. Floyd makes a minimum of $41 million and when pay-per-view royalties come in, despite streaming video piracy, the figure is estimated to double!
C.J. Ross will continue to judge fights. People will continue to pay huge amounts to be at the venue and watch, and people will continue to pay outrageous prices to watch on cable TV. Blogs reporters, TV sports anchors...all the activists who are complaining right now...well, that's yesterday's news, and it'll be forgotten by most everyone, replaced by "Oh, next month here's another blockbuster fight I gotta pay to see!" Followed by "Robbery! The fix was in!"
Lots of people LIKE to be disgusted. It's their favorite amusement!
