Now that he's croaked, and BB King is holding on, and it's been a slow news week for "entertainment," Ben E. King is being lauded as an icon.
Except he sang exactly ONE song anyone can name. He left The Drifters before their iconic hits, and IF I'M BEING HONEST, in the photo above, he looks like a panhandler trying to shake a buck from a high class call girl. Or just some pretentious and elderly white woman who is out spending her lawyer-hubby's money.

Who ever heard of it? It's about as well known as Ben E. King's discography.
Actually, each year "Symphony Space," a minor venue about a mile away from The Dakota, holds a fairly shitty show with budget local talent like Debbie Harry and Ben E. King and similar shrug-your-shoulders people.
It is creepily keyed to the anniversary of John's death, when emotional interest in John is running higher than usual. Even so...
Anyone bother to bootleg these shows? Are the stars so important that you go running to GooTube to check out the performances? Anyone have a set list? Anyone REVIEW the fucking show?
And yet, in trying to find things to say about Ben E. King, the media acts like he and this "event" are somehow vitally important.
Come on. "Stand By Me" was a good one-hit wonder. No need to blow it, or King out of proportion. PS, he was one homely son of a bitch.
