Joan Rivers, Elvis Costello and...PRINCE

Many years ago, 1984, Joan Rivers guest-hosted "The Tonight Show," and Elvis Costello was the musical act. Joan would gladly book musicians Carson would never consider.

She asked him for his opinions of various rock stars of the day.

"Grace Jones?"

"She once whacked somebody on the head with a clipper board...so it's a good thing she's not here."

"Dolly Parton"

"She used to sing some great songs. I haven't heard her for ages."

"Tina Turner."

"Oh, terrific."

"Huey Lewis?"

"He's a good bloke, he's an old mate."

"Van Halen."

"A root beer version of Rod Stewart."

Joan was impressed: "I'm crazy about you, because you tell the truth!"

Oh yes. She did ask him about one other star of the day.
